Belichick talks philosophy, mentors Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 3, 2008 01:30 PM

"One of the things we try to do this weekend [at rookie minicamp], and would highly recommend it to you and your programs based on my own personal experiences, we just really try to lay it out in terms of what we expect from the player," he said.

"People ask me 'What do you believe in and how do you try to coach your team?' That's what I would say it is. We try to tell the players exactly what we want them to do. Not 800 things to remember. But these are four things you need to do -- 'this is how we're going to approach this minicamp, this is how we're going to approach today's practice.' Tell them the four things that are most important to you, that you want to see at the end of the day, so when you call the team up at the end of the day or at night, you can say 'here are the four things we talked about in the morning and let's grade that. Let's see where we are today.'

"If they don't do what you tell them to do, I think you have every right to let them know about it, and to make them understand that's not going to be acceptable. Or more importantly, you can't win until those things are accomplished. That's also for when we go to a game-plan situation as well. So whoever our next opponent is, the first thing I'll do when I bring the team in is tell them 'Look, these are the things we have to do to win this game, or more importantly, if we do these things we're absolutely going to lose.'"

Crossfit for basketball

File this basketball workout as one of the most time-efficient ways to improve your skills, strength, speed and conditioning—all in two fun-filled routines!
Brought to you by the Shooting Touch and the innovative minds behind CrossFit training, “The Malleolo” is a dynamic combination of bodyweight drills and basketball skill work designed to improve your ability to perform at peak condition while fatigued.
Your arms will no longer feel heavy late in the game, so you will be able to maintain proper shooting form and nail those clutch baskets in the closing minutes. You’ll also be able to preserve your mental focus to make better decisions on both ends of the floor, even when your mind is feeling weary. The benefits are abundant.
Here’s how it works. You start the first routine by performing as many Bodyweight Squats as you can in 60 seconds. As time expires, you move into position behind the three-point line and attempt as many 3s as you can in 60 seconds.
Perform the series for five rounds, shooting from different spots beyond the arc on each one.
In the second routine of The Malleolo, perform 15  Burpees immediately followed by ten 15-foot jump shots, working on your shot fake and strong-and-weak hand dribbling skills before pulling up for the shots.
View the video above to watch the routines in action.

Pioneers BOB idea

Seattle Storm BOB

add chips variation

add western OR inbounder special

Riley Clark Shooting

Saw she pulled the ball back behind her head
Saw she move her hands to quickly up, so she created a hitch

had her shoot from pocket
had her mini hop

Talked to KW, watched film
"Treat her like a little kid, address the big things first"

Is her release consistent?  No
Make her stick and hold her release as it goes through, so that she begins to shoot the same shot

Her awkward release is related to her off hand, if her off hand comes off earlier she won't bring her hands back.
have her wear the strap on her guide hand, therefore the left hand can't come up

Her hands cheat up so there already at her head when she's on the floor, her hands cheat. There's no rythm.
Have her do chair shooting, that's one of the main things it teaches, everything moves together.1

Indiana Fever Playbook

Dana Altman's High Post Offense

Dana Altman's Team at Kansas State, Creighton and now Oregon have always played at a fast pace.  This means Altman's team's have a variety of presses in order to force tempo, run some form of secondary break because they expect to run on every possession, and finally run a half court offense that is easy to execute and spreads the floor for the wings and guards he recruits to be able to get to the paint and make play.

Altman's high post spread is a version of Jonny Orr's High post offense.  It has three phases:

The entry phase is the portion of the offense where it is entered after a fast break of another set play by simply filling spots on the perimeter, back doors and pressure releases are executed for the first entry pass to the wing, and false motion much like a Princeton set can be run to mis-direct the defense.

The cutters phase
is the part of the offense where the speed cut and elbow cuts are made.  The speed cut is a quick movement designed to get a layup on a defense that isn't playing the offense honestly (jump to the ball etc.) while the elbow cut is a movement that allows talented wings like EJ Singler to catch the ball at the elbow in an isolation to score.  These movements also shift the defense in order to set up the next phase.

The two man phase is the part of the offense where the point guard and the center run a drag pick and roll or a pinch post action at the elbow.  This action allows for the post player to get a switch a mismatch in the post, it forces the defense to rotate to help on the ball screen which will allow the pg to find other perimeter player filling in behind the pick and roll, and can also force defenses to guard a hand off at the elbow.

The beauty of this offense is the flexibility and ease of execution.  The offense has off ball movement, a ball reversal, and a terminating ball screen all built into the offense.  This allows Altman to easily get the basics of the offense in, then players don't have to think about high concept reads as much as running the basic motion of the offense and looking to attack when they have an opening.

Oregon City Mis-direction Backdoor Play

Start by filling these transition offense spots, the 1 will hit the 2 and run a curl and replace with the 3.

The 1 will receive the ball back form the 2 and start to dribble across the floor, the 3 will run off a double screen from the 4 and 5. the 2 will set up for a backdoor.

the one will ball fake at the 3, reverse pivot to the 2 who will begin to break to the three point line, the 1 will ball fake at the 2 which will send them backdoor.

Lots of hard uncomfortable speed ball handling stuff

really drilling her shoulder pop and raising her elbow to get more arc on her release

also shooting from the pocket

need to get her more 3's

Notes from ross's workouts

two chairs with a defender in between,

go full speed make the defender move

counter by going thru legs, spin dribble, or wrap dribble

you get surprised you must counter with the ball protected, cant front cross

and a help defender

Ross' Patented air contact finishing lesson

Players don't understand how to go get contact with  defender in air

They do understand the football celebration where player knock hips mid air

have them do that first, then explain its the same thing

Stanley Bob

I have always liked BLOBS that score off of options AFTER the ball has been inbounded.  This set gives you a look at an inside handoff or a misdirection set for a lay up late in games.

set up in a box set, your two best drivers are you 4 and your 3, your two best shooters are your 1 and 2.  5 screens for 3 who gets open around the ft line extended.  the 1 and the 2 will space out to the wing and corner.

the 5 will immediately pin down for the 4 who will look to catch the ball at the elbow from the 3. The 5 will space to the other block.

The 3 then speed cuts to off the 4 looking for a handoff, they turn the corner looking to score or to get the assist to a shooter or the 5 relocating at the rim.

Once you have run this you have set up the counter in which the 4 fakes the handoff to the 3 and then turns and drives for a lay-up.

ER Jags Shooter BOB

ER Jags Shooter BOB

Mis-direction is one of the best concepts to use when designing sets for your players.  Take this BOB for example, we call it shooter when what we really want to get is a drive for a lay up or foul.

start in a box set, the 3 is your driver, the 2 is your best shooter. The 5 and the 4 move up to set screens for the 1 and the 3, we then enter the ball to the 3.

the 5 and the 4 will now come together to form an elevator screen for the 2 to run through, however this is a fake action.

The 3 must be taught to sell the pass to the 2 but the look is the 3 driving the ball baseline as the defense will be flattened out.  We have the 1 re locate to the corner so we can get rift three pointers if they help from the weak side.

Addison

ER JAGS ADDISON SET

This is a play we run to get a wing iso/pick and roll look.

We start in what I would call and inverted floppy look.  The 2 can go either way though we'd prefer for them to go to the right wing so they have the baseline drive fro their strong hand, whichever way the 2 goes the 3 goes opposite after setting the first screen.  Although the set is primarily for the 2 the 3 can catch and have all the same options.

On the catch if the 2 has angle to score on the baseline they attack.

on the 2's catch the 5 with screen for the 4 who sprints into a ball screen for the 2, the 5 will locate at the edge line and will catch and look hi lo if the the 2 is trapped.

Oregon City ISO

OREGON CITY RIP ISO

This is an isolation play that I have seen Oregon City High School run for years.  I really like it because of its simplicity, but it still has an element of misdirection.

Start in a box set, the 3 is the player we want to isolate on the right side.  The play begins with the 1 hitting the 5 and then the 1 clears over the top to the ball side and the 2 clears to the corner on ball side.

the 3 then moves to set a rip screen for the 4 who cuts to the rim, you may want to coach the 4 to actually run into the 3's defender.  The 3 will shape up at the elbow and receive a pass from the 5.

The 3 will then drive and score.

box series

I got these sets from watching a team called the San Jose Cagers this past weekend.  They are a series all from a box set with built in counters.

The first set begins with an entry pass to the high post.  The guards will then clear to the wing and ball side corner.
The 1 will then move set a screen for the other post who will reject it and sprint to the rim looking for a backdoor lay in.  If the big isn't open the 4 will throw to the 1 replacing themselves after the fake screen.

The 5 will immediately duck in and the 1 will look to enter the ball to them.  On the weakside the guard and forward on the weakside will run a double screen for the guard in the corner.

The next set involves the same entry as the first.
This time the 1 will sell that they are setting the same downscreen as the last set, however this time the 5  will set a backpick for the 1 to run to the rim looking for a lay-up.  If the 1 isn't open then the ball will go to the 5 stepping out.

the 5 will then catch and then the 1 will run out to the 3 point line to set up a ballfake backdoor action with the 5.  On the weakside the action is the same as the first set to keep the defense occupied.
