adjustments in 1 up

1-1-3

go bigs at the elbows throw and run a handoff pg goes to the corner and ur still in 1 up big should look to other f diving and look to drive

1-3 with chaser

same thing, also put chased player at rollout and just run 1 up.

you should be able to get open shots, just got to be good enough to hit em.

sets other ideas

Duck to set up post or right handed driver
    into second pick and roll

2 -3 high offense, pass screen away until you get to the wing, then slip to the rim.  if you get a screen either curl or use the screen.  Fill the 4 perimeter spots.

post starts high if it goes wing they dive and post, seal at ft line if denied.  Post sets back screens for cutters using screens as they curl to the rim.

on the weak side slip if the post is down, look to flash to the ft line for iso drive.  Swing the ball and look for drives.

have a call for face cuts instead of screens.

on pass to center run turnout with screen down.

Special, after 5 sets back pick, roll down to post.

different formation and different action from 1 up.

Control offensive balance with the sets you call.  You control who gets shots and looks.

Trapping for all defense

first and most important thing= doesn't matter what trap we run, its all the same system.  22, chaos, go traps, stack and split.  Its all the same.....................the kids understand the concept, they understand the system.  I'm not really running different defenses.

Football coach= 10 plays from 60 different formations.

22 up= started with 23 trap in 5th grade, then extended it to half, then extended it 3 qtr, then went full all as they grew older.  never taught a new defense.

1) if you don't have players you're screwed

2) Coaches clinic at Kennedy, old dude showed his offense, then shoed it against zone, then showed how its his pressbreak, then show how he could run it against anything.  Simplicity= concepts

Trapping drills

two types of trap

NBA contain trap= two guys side by side, just alter pass and your teammates will get steal.  more to contain a great guard who you can't steal the ball from.  Chris Paul trap

Regular V trap= put pressure on player in trap go for a tip.  One player forces sprint dribble, other player takes an angle to lock in the v

Channel Trapping, can also be an offensive drill, put passing boxes up.

put cones up on key lines, if you want to work on contain trap start d at each one of the front cones, if you want to angle v trap, start one player on the ball and the other at the last cone they will attack dribbler once they cross the first cone.

then did shell with go traps.

did system traps next= Chaos, etc

1 up shots

Point guard

4 levels
close finishes
  Speed lay ups
  hook layups
power jump then through defenders nose into contact
long layups, no dribble after FT line
   layup without glass
   floaters
   runners
pull ups and true midrange
   pull up
   step back
3 pointers
   slow up, they're under
   step back 3

Wings, everything to score in the middle
    runners and floaters
    speed lay ups middle
    inside hand/backhand
    power jump through nose
ball sweep 1 dribble to rim
Pound pivot cross step turn around
pull ups and step backs middle
plus post entry and shot passes

Posts
Kai 3 things that were worked on
                   1) positioning and angles (sealing)
                   2) Rack moves
                   3) Quick feel moves with pivots
When you have a mismatch you don't want to use a rack move= help is already coming.  Instead you should feel the defender and make a quick pivot to score over the mismatch.

Thoughts and Eval after Alameda Game

Other kids starting to step up

Need to get Taylor going harder off the flat screen

Wing Offense+Reversal phase, post scoring, recognizing the size mismatches

need one more inbounds play= wok on shooter with mods

Need to be better screeners= Seattle +option and reads

Polish box Tay= if they don't over play?

5 ways

5 ways to defend Flat ball screen
Tight early  PG posts with the ball

Normal d watch hedge, pg attacks opposite hedge

Both def angle  delay angle screen the chest of the angle attack the big

Behind back up, once they come out attack opposite

Trap early to post, if they can dribble they attack, if its a non dribbler pass and dive (pop the four and dvie the five)

Paint game every time u touch get paint score or assist

Quarterback that just reverses the ball

Get in paint but you cant score until 1 reversal

Whatever im trying to get out of the drill i make a rule

Specifics while live

Everyone knows what to do on that play, football coaches, blocking schemes technique and assignment

Must touch hp before shot, after teaching irish

Be specific

5 on 5 get to paint score or assist

Flat must assist

1 reversal before you can score

1 post before you can score

Atmosphere of toughness
Every drill is a toughness drill

Go traps
Rules
1 protect basket
2 next pass
3 protect middle

Make them beat with the pass as far from the ball as possible

Scrambling
The philosophy

5 on 4 defensively 6 on 5

Contested jump shot is all we give up

Hone 3 rules with your traps, the should be universal with all our trapping D

Lombardi

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE NO. 1

Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.

Every time a football player goes to play his trade he's got to play from the ground up-from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second.

Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization-an army, a political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win-to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is.

It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there-to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules-but to win.
And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat.

I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
...Vince Lombardi

FIGHT

Why football coaches are good

Football coaches= when we run this play, this is the point of attack, this is why and how we are going to attack

Basketball coaches= Here's the play........................................

flat screen off= "The whole offense is predicated on getting in the paint."

Freakonomics Thesis

As humans, just because we get smarter doesn't mean we are less gullible.  We often research and look for evidence that supports what we already believe.

If you truly want to research, never begin with a preconception.  Let the data speak for itself.

Why do you think all the saber metric GMs were ivy league college students and not baseball players?

Paint game

Teach kids= especially wings and guards.  They must take an open shot or get to the paint.  3 on 3 take an open shot or get in the paint to score, draw a foul, or create for another teammate.  Everyone else must space outside the key.

"As soon as you care as much about success as breathing, you'll be successful."

UPS practice Monday nov 7 6am

Good On ball teaching point,

When fighting over the screen, get your near leg over so you can get in guarding position, don't get caught on screen and turn shoulders

High hands on hedge and recovery to force lob pass

Cardinal 21 and 3 2 great for developing attacking and sprint from behind.

ER practice for Monday Nov 7 (you went to UW)

Please take attendance of the girls who are there and shoot me a text with who was in attendance.

If Taylor is there she needs to simply ride on a recumbent bike or do some other kind of low to no impact cardio conditioning.

After Warm ups
they have 4 16 stops (sideline to sideline) that they must complete in a minute and 5 seconds with 35 seconds of rest in between.  If an individual does not make that time, make each individual that does not make the 16 in 105 do ten push ups at the end of the 4 sets for each time the fail to finish the 16 stops in a minute 5.

Line jumps next, have them find a line on the floor and have their toes pointing at the line.  The will quickly jump back and forth over the line as fast as they can for 1 minute with 35 seconds of rest in between 3 rounds.  After those 3 rounds, have them turn to the side so that they will be jumping side to side over the line.  Do they same set of 1 minute as fast as they can then 35 seconds of rest for 3 rounds.

To close set them up in pairs, you will do 4 rounds of a partner exercises.  Have one partner on the floor in a plank position while the other partner does jumps back and forth over them as fast as they can.  This goes on for 1 minute, then switch places.  do 4 rounds so everyone gets 2 planks and 2 jump rounds.  then you're done

Make sure to remind everyone that they need to take care of all their eligibility stuff before tryouts next Monday 430pm for girls
I will run conditioning Tuesday and Thursday  this week, make sure they know there's open gym Wednesday at 630pm.
Let them know that the 6th grade won their tourney this weekend.

Pioneers and Swish Practices thursday

6pm Pioneers

Started with inbounds plays 5 on 0

Emphasis:chop, smother, contest, rebound

VaTech keep away in groups of three, emphasis on Chop

2 v 2 don't commit numbers, both players chop on recovery, contest the three in the corner, rebound

4 v 4 spread helpside drill to 4.  stop or steal worth 1, charge worth 2.  stop= no lay up, no foul, no uncontested, no o board

4 v 4 helpside, but now with cutters and screeners to 5.  bang out cutters switch screens

4 v 4 post double helpside.  start with post double then rotate and play.

tip drill transition d. worked on fast break, worked on communication and matching up quickly.

Irish high vs 1-1-3.  Old Circus read, moved attacker way up used them as a pressure release.  Talked about forcing the top guards in the 1-1-3 to step so we can enter to the hp.  played 4v4

Put in C, worked on it 4 vs 4.

"Every drill is a rebounding drill!"

Swish 730 (note: Holly tonry stayed)

VaTech keep away with same emphasis
2v2 dont commit your numbers drill, then contest the corner 3.  Forwards struggled with that. Talked about bluff technique.

4 v 4 helpside same scoring

4 v 4 helpside plus cutters and screeners

4 v 4 tip drill, but talked about covering pick and rolls then doubling the post. ran that as secondary on the transition drill.

1 up flat phase 3 on 0, wing phase 3 on 0.

tried to go 3 on 3 on 3 with 22 on makes.  Needed a better explanation of the drill. Confusion on when they pressed.

Thursday private with trey and kelyn

4 pm
Finishing series

Euro inside out side hand, euro inside hand, euro floater, quick hand finishes

now had them play 1 v1 with broom, creative finishes, fake out the shot blocker,

4 v 4 drive and kick, teach baseline help rotations, make sure we can contest, Played to 5 stops

4 v 4 drive and kick, switch screens, no face cuts to 4 stops

4 v 4 double the post then rotate out to 3 stops

tip drill to transition defense to jump switch ball screen and double roller
     "must point and talk"

Key words
 Chop= chop your feet
Contest= Hand in the face, don't jump, "make them miss"
  Physical

Standards= Force a contested shot, no lay ups, no one in paint, box out and rebound for stop

Ups Men first practice

two a days 3 hours each

Shifting from DDM to read and react

Every Practice is war

Every drill is a rebounding drill, even makes, no out of bounds
  Slap the rebounder"test them"

"look at your body language"  mistakes happen, the most important play is the next one.

vision= see ball and man

made rebounding an initial part of everything, this is how we board out of this

PG must have a sense of urgency, get people together get them in a huddle tell them what to do.

when running offense they run to the boards and grab the ball for the rebound, then they sprint to their press spots, in a 5 on 0 drill.

cardinal drill

two lines, coach passes to one, get a tip then sprint back and call release to the big at the rim.  Big don't commit fully until u have to

Commit= show your numbers to the ball
don't commit= stay sideways, don't show numbers

Absolutely no jogging
